SidekicksThatMatter - The Winner

It’s been a wild month for the Non-Productive.com March Madness competition, Sidekicks That Matter, but we’ve learned a lot about what we all have come to expect from our heroic fiction. There are the main characters; people who’s struggles and successes we eagerly identify with, and there are the characters that make up the world of the story – and often times it is difficult to draw the line between the two. A good story keeps you invested in all the characters, including those that support the story beyond acting merely as plot devices. Still, as all good stories come to an end, so too does this year’s March Madness – as we finally have the most influential, most significant, most matter-ful “sidekick” ready to be crowned the winner.

And with no further ado, we present to you your winner….

PO-TA-TOES

Really, was there ever any doubt?

Samwise Gamgee literally carried the “hero” of Middle Earth to the fiery chasm of Mount Doom. Frodo had one job; end the danger of the One Ring for good by tossing it away, but the thing is, he can’t bring himself to do it. He’s weakened, he’s tempted, he’s crushed – and before he can bring himself to the one place in the world he needed to go, he gives up. It is Sam that, without supplanting Frodo, helps him reach his destiny. But he really does a lot more than that…

Unlike a lot of so-called sidekicks we’ve talked about, Samwise represents hope to the hopeless and maintains that through the end of the tale. We’ve heard a lot of jokes from naysayers that suggest Sam was somehow less important because all he wanted to do was go back home and start a family, but it is that very fact that makes him so important to the story! This is no grim-dark fantasy where the only hope is a quick death doing something semi-important, nor is is a sanitized fairytale where everything ends happily ever after. In this story, heroes go through their journey, mourn their losses, and some of them, Sam especially, move on to the next big adventure. A life well lived.

Thanks to everyone that votes, commented, shared, and enjoyed our little March Madness competition. We can’t wait until next year!
