Kaworu Nagisa from Neon Genesis Evangelion

Despite only a brief appearance in the anime, Kaworu's not-so-ambiguous relationship with Shinji is tragic and exciting. Neon Genesis Evangelion was a legendary anime for its time, and Kaworu a cult figure.

Utena Tenjou from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Another groundbreaking anime series, another revolutionary look into the very queerness of genre. Featuring a strong female lead that questions her role in society, deciding she'll become a prince and do all the saving herself!

    Deadpool from Marvel Comics

Deadpool is an insane character known for breaking the fourth wall, and as a self-described "pansexual" he epitomizes the desire to shed traditional labels and just embrace what feels right.

Big Gay Al from South Park

Despite being a ridiculous stereotype, Big Gay Al is one of the few truly compassionate and good characters on South Park, providing a moral compass few seem to have. Al embraces who he is without shame, and thus the character has evolved into an icon.

    Birdo from The Mario Series

From a stray line of description in the manual for a video game, to a unofficial trans mascot, Birdo shows the liberating power that people have over the icons they choose to adopt!

    Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons

Activist, progressive, humanitarian, and gay icon, Lisa Simpson embodies the finest aspects of our struggle to become better people, and with enough head-nods included in the show to suggest that Lisa might more than an ally to the LGBTQ community.

    Jodie Dallas from Soap

Soap was an American sitcom that parodied soap operas and aired between 1977-1981, and featured one of television's first openly gay characters, played by none other than Billy Crystal. Portraying gay characters is still difficult today, but Crystal managed to give us the character of Jodie, a gay man not expressly played for laughs, decades ago.

    Tom Collins from RENT

RENT was a powerful musical that fearlessly humanized the AIDS epidemic, and Jessie Martin's portrayal of Tom Collins is a key reason why this story grew to become embraced by audiences world-wide.
