Bonus Round: Super Mario Oddyssey

Hold onto your hat, platformer fans!  Mario’s back in Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch.

In this latest entry of the Super Mario series, Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach once again, this time with the intention of marrying her. In order to stop Bowser’s dastardly wedding plans, Mario will have to travel aboard the Odyssey, an airship that looks curiously like a hat, to a variety of different worlds called “Kingdoms.”

Each kingdom has a unique setting and style, ranging from a brightly colored desert world to a teeming city run by Pauline.  Yes, Mario’s former girlfriend from the original Donkey Kong returns as the mayor of New Donk City, a photo-realistic world based on New York City, and the inspiration for the game’s Broadway-like theme song.

Super Mario Odyssey is a return to the style of classic Mario games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Mario will be able to explore vast open worlds to collect Power Moons, this game’s version of Stars or Shines, to power the Odyssey. The game’s unique mechanic is Cappy, a sentient hat that joins Mario on his journey. Mario will be able to use Cappy in a variety of ways, including using it to attack enemies, act as a platform and even possess NPCs, enemies and objects to use their special abilities. A second player can also join in for cooperative action, and control Cappy while player 1 controls Mario.

While he wasn’t directly involved in the project, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto was consulted by the team during development, and he says that this game is a return to the roots of the series.

Do you think that Odyssey will CAPture the same magic as the previous Super Mario games?  Let us know in the comments below.
