Awful Puppets: A NonPro Advent Calendar-December 13th

SEASON’S GREETINGS, NONPRODUCTIVEERS!

We are pleased to announce that this year’s advent calendar will feature something near and dear to all of our hearts during this holiday season: Horrible, awful, terrifying puppets and dolls!

And now for a delightful Christmas classic, The Elf and Mr. Little

Interestingly, today’s post is another example in NonPro’s long and poorly documented war with Wikipedia.

Barely a day after “The Elf and Mr. Little” was scheduled to appear in our advent calendar, the Wikipedia article about the short was deleted for being non-notable. Yes, that’s right, the site that has roughly one million articles on the various stages of pokemon evolution doesn’t have room for this glorious and terrifying short. Kudos.

Actually, kudos to us – for we saved the now dead article and moved it over to our barely used NonPro Wiki! Here is the meat of the post for those of you too lazy to click the link:

The Elf and Mr. Little is a Christmas marionette short subject written by Peter Son, photographed by Roland Price, and produced in 1953. No director is credited.

The story is told by Mrs. Little (voiced by Fran Tolleson), the wife of Mr. Little. We see, in a flashback sequence that takes up most of the film, how Mr. Little changed from an old, grumpy toymaker who hated Christmas to a kindly, loving man who is beloved by all the children. One Christmas season, Mr. Little (voiced by Jack Beveridge) bemoans the fact that he has no one to help him finish the Christmas toys on time. Suddenly, an elf appears and tells Mr. Little that he will finish the toys on time if Little will let him have the toy of his choosing. Mr. Little agrees and the elf gets to work, occasionally visited by a poverty stricken little girl. The elf, once he is finished, demands that Mr. Little give him a doll, which the toymaker does. The elf leaves.

Curious to find out what he will do with the gift, Mr. Little follows the elf, who goes to a church, where he gives the doll to the little girl. Touched that the elf would give a beautiful gift so easily to someone he knew, Mr. Little changes completely and learns to appreciate the true spirit of Christmas.

In some releases, the image is tinted blue, rather than shown in ordinary black-and-white.

The eyes say "bored" but the mouths say "we'll be screaming for all eternity"
